Dr. Ben Johnson has been the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools for Bismarck Public Schools (ND) since 2014. He has a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Iowa State University. He achieved his master’s degree from The University of Iowa and his undergraduate degree is from Cornell College in Iowa.
As an executive coach, Johnson believes that organizational leaders have two primary roles: to “Create a Culture of Influence” and to be the “Lead Learner.” At the core of his leadership philosophy is fostering and maintaining relationships with all stakeholders, so they feel that they are valued members of their community. He believes that as leaders, we have the power to shape culture and guide the learning that empowers others to change the trajectory of students’ lives, impact their families, and redefine the potential of entire communities—ultimately becoming a destination organization where people want to live, work, and thrive.
With over two decades of experience as a teacher and administrator, Dr. Johnson is passionate about leading systems that support innovative learning practices. He fosters innovative, personalized learning environments by combining project-based learning, customized scheduling, and the effective use of technology. He champions competency-based education integrated within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports that form the cornerstone for authentic learning experiences. Dr. Johnson is committed to preparing students for personalized learning pathways by cultivating a culture of learning rooted in strong relationships and innovative practices.
